About Beautiful Gate

Beautiful Gate is a registered non-profit organisation, strengthening families and communities, providing direct support to orphans, vulnerable children and families. A non-denominational Christian organisation, Beautiful Gate was established in 1994, with a project caring for street children in Muizenberg.

In 1999, the organisation opened a hospice for children dying from AIDS and soon realised that children are best cared for by their families within their own communities.

The communities Beautiful Gate serves, comprise of areas within the Nyanga Health district, such as; Old Crossroads, Lower Crossroads, Philippi, Brown’s Farm and Barcelona. All these areas suffer from high unemployment, low income levels, poor access to health-care, little or no educational opportunities and the per capita income in the area, is less than R1 000 per month ($142 per month).

In Muizenberg, they work in Steenberg, Vrygrond, Retreat and Lavender Hill. These communities have a high incident of drug and alcohol abuse, which, in turn leads to abuse of children. These children find it difficult to stay at home - and tend to run away, resulting in a high incident of street children. Currently, they care for over 400 children and 200 families, with 286 children on ARV medication for HIV.

Their work has also encouraged 60 adults to start ARV treatment. 42 of the children are in residential care, because they have been orphaned, or their parents are too sick to care for them, or they have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Children are referred to Beautiful Gate's residential care by child welfare. Their goal is to reunite the children with their biological families and where this is not possible - to find alternate foster care.

The rest of the children are part of the Community Care Program, which has several components, including after care programs, holiday clubs and a Paediatric ARV clinic. The clinic is run in conjunction with the local government.
